Teachers in Edo State demand for improved welfare package

Teachers in Edo State under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers have cried out over the non-payment of Edo Best stipends of 2018 and 2019 to teachers, both serving and retired who participated in the training programmes despite the budgetary provisions made by the state government.

A statement by the NUT State Chairman and Assistant Secretary General Pius Okhueleigbe and Moni Mike Modesty Itua, State Chairman and Secretary of AOPSHON, Fidelis Oigbochie and Aigbeoromwan Agho while Martins Nosakhare and Masagbor Stephen who signed for CCTN as State Chairman and Secretary also condemned the non-payment of primary schools teachers in Oredo and Uhunmwonde Local Government Areas of their 2013 and 2015 promotion arrears by the Edo SUBEB and asked that the payment are urgently made.

The statement says Primary school head teachers and their teachers are still responsible for provision of instructional materials in the schools despite the Sixty Million Naira approved by the state governor as announced by the Chairman of Edo SUBEB.

The teachers resolved that all public primary schools substantive heads or acting heads and teachers should disregard any form of threat either from SUBEB leadership or its agents of the board as such threats and intimidation will continuously be resisted by the union.

It also called on SUBEB to without delay, release the Sixty Million Naira subvention for third term to schools as approved by the state government as any form of test being contemplated by SUBEB for recruitment of school heads is unacceptable.

The statement also called on Edo State Government to recruit teaching personnel into public primary and secondary schools for effective teaching and learning delivery.

The statement asked NUT members of the state to be prepared for further actions that may be deemed necessary and advised school heads and acting schools heads to continue to carry out their lawful assignments and not to handover to any illegal persons directed by SUBEB.

The Chairman of Edo SUBEB, Doctor Joan Oviawe is yet to respond to the news crew request for an interview on the issues raised by the NUT in this report.
