A squirrel in Colorado tested positive for the bubonic plague last weekend, according to the Jefferson County Public Health department. The disease, which has been around for centuries, killed an estimated 50 million people in Europe during the Black Death pandemic in the Middle Ages — one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. The plague has recently made a comeback, and the World Health Organization has categorized it as a re-emerging disease.
