After learning that his former high school substitute teacher was sleeping in his car, Steven Nava raised $27,000 for Jose Villarruel through a GoFundMe campaign. The 21-year-old gave the check to Villarruel at a surprise birthday party for the teacher. Villarruel said he made the decision to live in his car because he was sending most of his income to his wife, children and extended family in Mexico. “You’re sort of just baffled when you find out that one of your teachers is just homeless,” Nava said.

  1. This isn’t a “feel good” story; it’s another example of failed capitalism. We need a living wage. Universal housing. Medical insurance for all.

  2. Great young man—a man with a heart —-the teacher is also a great person—to live in his car for his family. God will look down on you both and smile.😂

  3. We need more of this. not all people from Mexico are bad people. Most of them just coming from poverty and tryna make it 🙌
