Comedian and actress Kristina Wong formed a team of volunteers to make masks during the coronavirus pandemic. At the beginning of the operation, Wong sewed solo and used pieces of fabric laying around her home to make face coverings. When requests for masks exceeded her ability to make them, however, Wong posted a call for sewing volunteers on Facebook, and soon launched the “Auntie Sewing Squad” Facebook group, which now has over 800 members across the country. The aunties are working together to serve and assist communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic, including Native Americans, farmworkers, immigrants, and communities of color. Wong says that “while we [the aunties] are enjoying each other’s company in this very strange time in history, we shouldn’t have to be doing this work. This is absolutely the government’s job.”
