Edo CP: Police officers were scared to put on uniform when I assumed office

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Philip Ogbadu, has said he assumed at time when policemen were not wearing uniform on account of the attacks that followed the #EndSARS protest.

Ogbadu said this on Monday in Benin when he received the National President, Police Officer Wives Association, Hajia Hajara Usman Baba Alkali, and her entourage.

“As at the time we came in January, it was a difficult time in Edo arising from the scars of #EndSARS protest.”

“Police were no longer wearing uniform, they couldn’t go out for patrol, while discipline and morale were low. We were also having as many as seven kidnapping and 10 robbery cases in a day but with the management team headed by me, we were able to reclaim the public space.”

He explained that it took time and effort to build the morale, discipline and confidence of officers.

CP Ogbadu commended the POWA president for taking interest in Edo as well as the welfare and empowerment of officers wives as a priority.

“With your motherly advice, we have commenced the construction of the police primary school at Etete division and environmental sanitation exercise at Ogida barrack,” he said.

On her part, Hajia Hajara Baba Alkali said POWA’s visit was to give a voice to the officers, men of the state command and wives of police officers.

She added that she is also in the state to flag off empowerment for widows of fallen offers, fitness and sanitation exercise in police barracks across the state.

She said her agenda as POWA’s president is education, welfare and health of wives of police officers.

“We came out to empower widows of fallen heroes to let them know that they are not alone. It is encouraging knowing that their services to the nation will go unrewarded as their wives and children are well adequately catered for,” she said.
