Paolo Rossi: Italy football legend’s home burgled during his funeral | World News
The home of Italian football legend Paolo Rossi was burgled during his funeral on Saturday, Italy’s ANSA news agency has reported.
Rossi, who helped Italy win the 1982 World Cup with six goals in the tournament, died aged 64 on Thursday and his funeral took place in Vicenza on Saturday morning.
ANSA said that his wife Federica Cappelletti returned to their house near the Tuscan village of Bucine afterwards and found it had been broken into and valuables stolen.
Italian national daily Gazzetta dello Sport said that she came back from the service to find the house ransacked.
A watch, jewellery and some cash were among the items taken, according to Italian media.
Memorabilia linked to Rossi’s career had not been taken, however.
The family lived on a farm they had converted into a tourist complex near a popular beauty spot, which was well known and widely reported.
The break-in has been reported to police and an investigation is taking place.
Earlier on Saturday, Paolo Rossi’s former teammates served as pallbearers as his coffin was taken into the cathedral in Vicenza.
Only 300 people were allowed inside because of coronavirus restrictions but thousands had paid their respects to Rossi in the preceding days in a viewing room at the Stadio Menti in Vicenza.
His former teammate Antonio Cabrini said during the service: “I haven’t lost just a teammate but a friend and a brother. Together we fought, won and sometimes lost, always getting back up after disappointments.
“We were part of a group, that group, our group…I already miss you, your comforting words, your quips and your stupid jokes.”
When he won the World Cup, Rossi had returned from a suspension following a betting scandal in 1980.
He later worked as a commentator in his home country.
Rossi’s teammates from the winning World Cup squad carried the coffin into the cathedral, led by Marco Tardelli and accompanied by Rossi’s son, Alessandro.
Rossi’s blue shirt from the World Cup was laid on top of the coffin.
Other Italian greats Roberto Baggio and Paolo Maldini also attended, as did the president of the Italian soccer federation.
Rossi’s body was due to be cremated on Sunday.
A minute’s silence will take place before all Serie A matches this weekend and players will wear a black armband.
