San Francisco recently launched its Street Crisis Response Team to replace police officers for certain nonviolent 911 calls. The squad consists of a behavioral health clinician, paramedic and peer counselor. “We really want to reduce or eliminate law enforcement from going to non-violent calls or behavioral or social crises in which no crime has taken place,” said San Francisco Fire Department section Chief Simon Pang, who is leading this effort. We followed along as the unit patrolled the streets and helped individuals experiencing mental health crises

  1. Why wouldn’t the police be on stand-by in case the counselors or paramedics need it? Non-violent calls don’t always end that way.

  2. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Brilliant !!! Need this everywhere and it should come with commensurate restructuring of police force

  3. This needs to be a part of every single police force in the country! Thank you San Francisco for stepping up and showing us how it’s done!
